Here is great news for all you Skype fans. Not only is Skype’s software great, but the guys out there also keep introducing new stuff all the time. Skype’s latest venture is the release of a new Beta version of its already sought-after VoIP client for Windows Mobile, Skype 2.5 Beta. Not that there is a hell lot that is different here, but it always helps to have your applications all spruced up and ready to go, right?

For one, Skype 2.5 Beta is far more stable than its previous version. The sound quality of this latest version is far better and the user interface has been improved as well. Of course, even the earlier releases of Skype have all been user-friendly enough, so that is not such a great big difference either.

Google brings Location-Aware Searches to Windows Mobile

In our last few posts we have been mentioning the way mobile search is taking its space in devices, before it was Microsoft to provide Live Search to BlackBerry devices and now it is Google that have made its location-aware search function available to a wide range of Windows Mobile devices.

The search functionality encompasses Google Gears software to be installed on the handset. The search funtionality offer a location based preferential search by which the search engine grabs information about the cell towers near you and searches results are tailored based on your location rather than you having to enter one.

This location based search with My Location will be available in the US and UK for intial trial period. Here is how you can do that – visit google.com from your phone and click on the My Location link under the search box (you may have to refresh the page to see the link).

BlackBerry grows in America, stagnant growth in Asia

We have seen records of RIM growth in America and the recent stats by IDC says that RIM’s dominant U.S. market share has hit 44.5 percent last quarter, but the other side of coin is pretty dull. In the Asia-Pacific region, Windows Mobile devices hold stronger market penetration, at an estimated 6 million devices shipped last year – while RIM’s was under 1 million, according to Springboard Research.

Besides the cost of the BlackBerry server, its service costs are higher than Windows Mobile’s push mail service, resulting in a higher total cost of ownership (TCO). Bryan Wang, research director of connectivity at Springboard, told ZDNet Asia in an e-mail interview that BlackBerry’s uptake in the region is slower than that in the U.S. partly because of Windows Mobile’s dominance, and also due to the associated service costs associated with BlackBerry’s push mail function. An that is not all RIM soon will have to face increased competition at Sprint stores because of Samsung’s Instinct smartphone, this estimate to roughly 9% of RIM’s revenue.
