Acer announced a whole bunch of Windows Mobile-based smartphones earlier this year and had previously indicated that they would enter the retail market before the end of 2009.
But now, it seems as though Acer’s plans to enter the U.S. smartphone market have changed a wee bit. Acer has now announced that it has run into snags with U.S. network operators, and they will result in a delayed launch. The best Acer would commit to saying is that its smartphones will be available in the U.S. some time in 2010.

A new native Facebook application has now become available. This app for Windows Mobile boasts a wide range of features, including the ability to upload video from the phone directly to Facebook. Users will additionally be able to access status updates, friend requests and photo tags, and read / create wall posts, share photos, send messages and update profile pictures too.
The application will integrate across other Windows Live services as well, where Facebook users can share their updates, comments and more. The download is free, and Microsoft indicated that a version compatible with Windows Mobile 6.5 will be available soon, as and when that platform goes live.

Two computer science professors at Washington University have now produced a USB ultrasound probe which is compatible with Windows Mobile smartphones. The novel project is funded by Microsoft. The company has developed and optimized the probe that uses less power, and is enhanced for data transfer rates on cellphones.
These devices could be especially useful in emergency situations – for ambulances, traveling medical staff and so on. The makers also foresee that the device could help medical practice in the developing world, where equipment and doctors may be scarce, but where cellphone access is prevalent. We do not know when these might be commercially available, but they are hoping to sell them for around $500, which is much cheaper than many portable ultrasounds, which can cost almost $30,000.

The new Acer F900 is creating quite a lot of curiosity among mobile lovers. Looking a lot like the HTC TouchHD, only a little less refined UI and no 3.5mm audio jack, this cutie running Windows Mobile will come at a price of 25,000 rubles when it finally enters the Russian market, which amounts to a whopping $745.
The Acer F900 features a giant WVGA display, 3G, GPS, WiFi, and all the trimmings. But all said and done, one does feel the massive difference between HTC’s stellar TouchFLO 3D. Well, we really have to wonder how far this smartphone will last in the market, what with the smartphone competition getting tighter each day. Hmm, time will tell….
