Microsoft officially announced today that they are ready to accept applications for their Windows Marketplace smartphone app store. This will go on air as soon as Windows Mobile 6.5 becomes available to the general public. Microsoft will also be organising a contest called The Race to Market Challenge, which plans to offer winning developers huge prizes like the developer edition of the Microsoft Surface touchscreen table, which is currently used by companies such as AT&T. The current rumor in the mobile market is that Verizon Wireless will be introducing the white Samsung Omnia II very soon. Not only that, some sources also suggest that this will be a Windows phone. It is believed that the Omnia II smartphone, to be available in July this year, will come with Windows Mobile 6.1 initially, after which it will be upgraded to Windows 6.5 later.
Some of you may be aware that the Samsung Omnia II is one of the first smartphone devices to use an AMOLED display, with the usual TouchWiz UI upgraded to TouchWiz 2.0 with 3D cube UI effects in this particular version.

A rendering of the HTC Firestone smartphone is rumoured to have been revealed online recently. This apparently shows the device in all its glory, with its 3.6” WVGA resolution touchscreen monitor, Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional and HTC’s famed UI as well. The Firestone is the update of the Touch HD smartphone.

Other specs of the HTC Firestone include an 8MP camera, 600MHz Qualcomm 8250 processor, accelerometer, standard 3.5mm audio port and Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP support. The device is believed to be readying for an August 2009 launch.
