3 UK Offers Free Mobile Skype Calls For All Time

The latest news is that UK-based 3 has promised to let its customers use unlimited Skype-to-Skype calls and messages without any extra fees. The new rules start May 1st for any compatible 3 headset. Later this summer, it plans to expand to every 3G phone on the network.
The company says it sees the initiative as a win-win situation for everyone, not just the customers, as the hope is it’ll lessen calls to people on other networks, which carries a hefty Mobile Termination Rate fee.

Whatever the reasons, it is great to see at least one company embracing the VoIP service. We are hoping this thing catches on with other carriers as well.

New Carrier, Zer01 Mobile, Emerges In The Market

A new company known as Zer01 Mobile has apparently emerged in the market and it claims to be a phone carrier. It offers users unlimited voice and data for $70 per month, on SIM-unlocked smartphones. Zer01 Mobile now also has a roaming agreement with AT&T, but employs its very own IP. So calls going through AT&T’s data network use Zer01 proprietary VoIP services. This VoIP service from Zer01 application is a welcome thing, because it works seamlessly over AT&T’s GPRS and EDGE networks, when the 3G network is unavailable.

Zer01’s VoIP facility now works only with Windows Mobile 6, but the company plans to increase its reach by offering its services to the Android, BlackBerry, Symbian and Java platforms too, in the near future. The other good thing about Zer01 is that it does not require contracts – the service renews each month. The company will be launching a closed beta version in April and the full release will hopefully be on soon after that.
