FCC Okays Sidekick With 3G For T-Mobile And The Samsung i8910 Smartphone

The FCC has recently given the nod to two smartphones for the United States recently. They include a new Sidekick model for T-Mobile and the Samsung i8910 smartphone. The very novel Sidekick features support for T-Mobile’s 3G network, for high-speed data transfers, and is said to be manufactured by Sharp.

The FCC has also officially acknowledged the dual-band GSM (850/1900MHz) and single 3G frequency (1900MHz) smartphone, the Samsung i8910, which was announced at the MWC 2009 held in February. The phone may actually feature quad-band GSM and tri-band 3G. This is probably the first smartphone to be powered by Nokia’s S60 5th Edition user interface and features an 8MP camera that can also record HD video.

T-Mobile to Release a Couple New Sidekicks for 2009

Once upon a time T-Mobile’s Sidekicks were the big “kahuna” of all devices and smartphones. Its ability to access the web, email, and instant message were out of this world. However, we can honestly look back and come to terms that those days have long passed, and T-Mobiles offer of the G1 android based phone is an attempt to “re-invent” the craze that once Sidekicks created.

With this being said, a company called PCD (Personal Communications Devices) a venture that distributes handsets and markets them as well released a bit of lengthy news regarding the forecasted and confirmed release of several new phones such as the Quickfire for AT&T and a couple for HTC. They also announced that they will handle a variety of new Sidekicks for T-Mobile within this year. Previous Sidekicks did not have 3G, Wi-Fi, or full HTML browser capabilities. Hopefully this time around T-Mobile will capture the needs of a much needed and anticipated return of the “Sidekick craze”, and release a truly competitive device to our new adaptive market of iPhones and BlackBerries that can basically do whatever you want it too.
