HP Announces New Affordable, Flexible, Plastic Display

HP today announced new technology to develop a flexible plastic display prototype, which uses far less energy reserves and is also much more cost-effective than most other displays available today. Developed along with Arizona State’s FTC (Flexible Display Center), this material is said to be “unbreakable”, using 90% lesser raw materials, while also ‘going green’, as it is that much more environmentally friendly.

This particular display appears similar to paper and employs what is known as self-aligned imprint lithography or SAIL. The process sees to it that the patterning information uses a technique of perfect alignment on the substrate, irrespective of process-induced distortion.

The SAIL, HP says, would be a “more sustainable, environmentally sensitive approach to producing electronic displays.” HP has not yet stated how soon in the future this technology would be used to make products such as mobile phones and laptops, but expects that this product will be a complete sell-out when it eventually enters the markets.
