Google Brings Forth the New Unlocked G1 for Android Developers

In a path-breaking effort, Google has now created an unlocked version of the HTC G1, which is open for registered Android developers. This latest version of G1 is called Android Dev Phone 1 and is SIM-unlocked and bootloader unlocked, thereby making it usable with other networks and particularly customizable for Android 1.0. Before purchase, the buyer has to first become a registered Android developer by paying a one-time fee of $25. This device is clearly not for end users, but only for qualified developers. You have the freedom to use any SIM card and work from there on with your custom Android builds.

The Android Dev Phone 1 comes at the cost of $399, which includes free shipping. At present, it will be open to customers in the US, UK, Japan, Canada, France, India, Germany, Poland, Finland, Hungary, Switzerland, Australia, Spain, Taiwan, Austria, Netherlands, Sweden and Singapore, with more locations included over a period of time. The Android Dev Phone 1 is expected to pull in developers from many parts of the world, especially those who cannot use the T-Mobile in their particular territory.
