AT&T Say They Are Sold Out Of iPhone 3G S Pre-orders, Already!

Apple releases only one new iPhone every year, as far as we have seen so far. This time, Apple allowed pre-orders of its latest iPhone 3G S at all AT&T outlets across the US. Well, AT&T now says that they are sold out of iPhone 3G S launch-day pre-order stocks.

This, of course, is great news for Apple, but bad news for those of you who have been hoping to get your hands on the smartphone on launch day, June 19. So your other option is to reserve your order at any Apple retail store or order it online. You choose your particular iPhone 3G S model and rate plan from the website or the retail store form and then walk out on Friday morning with your brand new Apple iPhone 3G S!

Please note that AT&T still adheres to its “loyalty tax” policy, so any current iPhone 3G subscriber will have to pay up $200 extra for an early upgrade to 3G S. Well, folks, tighten your seat belts – the mother of all smartphones arrives shortly!

AT&T To Upgrade 3G Network with 7.2Mbps HSDPA For New iPhone

Most of you might recall that the launch of the Apple iPhone 3G was preceded by AT&T’s announcement of 3G network upgrades, finally bringing HSPA (HSDPA and HSUPA) to the US. And, now that the third-iteration of the iconic iPhone is soon to come, AT&T has announced yet another round of 3G network upgrades, planning to roll out 7.2Mps HSDPA upgrades for its entire 3G HSPA network in the US!

The upgrade to the much more efficient HSDPA spec will allow AT&T to serve up 3G data speeds at a theoretical max of 7.2Mbps on the downlink, double the current theoretical max of 3.6Mbps. More importantly, it will allow the new iPhone to really work great on the AT&T network. The upgrade to 7.2Mbps HSDPA should increase capacity as well as wireless data speeds, but AT&T is also working to boost capacity through hardware expansion – adding HSPA carriers at some cellsites and upgrading backhaul networks to handle the increased load.

RUMOR: AT&T May Be Planning To Offer iPhones Without Contract

The latest rumor in cellphone town is that AT&T may be planning to begin offering the Apple iPhone 3G smartphone for sale, without a contract. This, it is rumored, was leaked during an internal presentation held by the carrier.

According to this information, the iPhone 3G will be available without contract only for AT&T customers. The pricing may be around $599 for the 8GB iPhone 3G and $699 for the 16GB iPhone 3G. Yet another piece of related info is that this new pricing could come into effect from March 26. The catch is that an activation fee will still be charged when the device is activated on the AT&T Network.
