Sony Ericsson Adds Apps to PlayNow

After having introduced PlayNow with movies, Sony Ericsson today announced that it plans to offer more mobile applications through its PlayNow service. The addition of application content means users of Sony Ericsson handsets will have a central location to purchase a variety of content. The PlayNow arena now supports music, ring tones, games, themes, wall papers, movies and applications.

Sony expects the service to launch in 13 countries on 38 different compatible handsets. Sony will roll it out to more markets and models over the year. As part of the launch, Sony is announcing a new partnership with GetJar, which is offering its library of over 45,000 free applications via PlayNow. Sony Ericsson also said that it will begin accepting applications from developers starting July 1. PlayNow apps will initially support Java ME and Symbian OS. Additional platforms will be supported later this year.
